First of all, I am so sorry that I haven’t posted for a while.  I have been on holiday in France for the summer.  I have had such a lovely time in the sunshine with family and friends, but have  had a chance to catch up on other beauty blogs  and vlogs and get inspiration for post ideas that I think are relevant to young teens.

I have been trying to tweet more and have loved finding famous quotes about beauty by inspirational people to share.  I love words by Audrey Hepburn and have been fascinated by her consistent message that beauty comes from within.  You can’t just make yourself beautiful by slapping on make-up.  So, I started researching this a bit more and came across Monica Kade.  She has an interesting story and helps coach adults and teens understand their self worth and live their ‘truth’.  Monica has very kindly put together her top points for helping us to ‘rock our real beauty’.  See what you think ….

“Beauty is YOU. Make-up is just an expression of who you are.”  – Monica Kade

Here are some life tips for ensuring you are being your beauty!

1  Before you put on make up, look in your eyes. Connect with your inner self. Get to know the real you.You may feel this is silly or feels kind of funny, but if you can create a good connection with yourself and love yourself no matter what the external says, while you’re still young, this will give you so much confidence, peace and love for your self when you’re older.

2  Take a moment each day to appreciate your face, your body, no matter what size or shape it is.  Everyone is beautiful. If you’re having a bad skin day, don’t beat yourself up. It’s temporary. Always remember that. Don’t make your worth be dependant on your beauty.

3  Be yourself! Make-up is not who you are, it’s a way you get to you express yourself. If you enjoy beauty products and have fun creating new looks, that’s wonderful – that’s your creative side coming out. So have FUN with it, but don’t make it who you are.

4  Appreciate yourself! When you moisturise your face, do so with love and care. Appreciate your skin, your lips, your eyes, your nose and everything else. Your inner dialogue and thoughts affect the way your feel and the way your body reacts. So be nice to yourself. It will keep you looking radiant as you age.

(I’ve recently been using PONDS Hydrating Moisturiser, it’s so gentle and hydrating on the skin)

5  Remember that life is about having fun!  Every day wake up and ask yourself, “how much fun can I handle today?’ This will put you in the perfect frame of mind for attracting lots of fun.  Do what you love and love what you do.

6 Never forget that the make-up does not make you better or more beautiful. It simply enhances the beauty that is already there!

Oh and I can’t resist adding one of Audrey Hepburn’s quotes , ‘The happiest girls are always the prettiest’ – remember to smile – it’s contagious!

OMG – how hot is it!?!  The UK is experiencing a massive heat wave for the first time since 2006!   Temperatures are in the early 30s which is seriously hot.  It’s so nice to go out and enjoy the sunshine although it can be really uncomfortable and almost too hot to do anything when you’re not used to it.  So, here’s my guide to surviving the heat wave…

So one day last Autumn, there I was sat with my Mum and sister in the foodcourt at West Quay in Southampton, munching on my lunch when I was approached by two pretty young women.  They explained that one of them, Charly was an aspiring fashion/beauty photographer and the other, Kirsten was an aspiring makeup artist.  They asked me if I would consider modeling for them so they could use the photos in their portfolios and I agreed.

Six months later, my Mum and I headed off to Charly Woodhouse’s studio in Southampton.  Kirsten sat me down and spent at least two hours transforming me into a kind of whimsical, fairy like character.

Here are some shots from the day:

I had such a fun day! I think I look completely different and this shoot just goes to show how hair and makeup can completely change your look.

I was so excited when the brilliant beauty blogger, Scarlett London nominated me to enter the Beauty and the Beach 2 blogging competition sponsored by  The challenge is to write a blog post on summer hair, make-up and nails and explain how to achieve it.  This is my entry!  I hope you like it …..

At last, the sun has come out and the temperatures are rising!  It’s time to get your shorts out and your sandals on.   Just as we change our clothes for the season, it’s also a brilliant opportunity to review and update our make-up.  I have been experimenting and have raided my Mum’s make-up box to come up with this look, but the colours are pretty standard and on trend so you can easily copy if you like it.  I am going for a sun kissed gold theme with a pop of vibrant green to make my eyes stand out.  Let me know what you think …..

SKIN CARE: First of all, prepare your skin by cleansing, toning and moisturising.  Preparation is everything!  I am currently using Melvita which is a really lovely, completely natural skincare range designed for young skin.

EYEBROWS: Make sure you’ve plucked all those stray hairs – ungroomed brows are never a good look. Don’t go too thin and remember eyebrows aren’t twins, they’re sisters so don’t worry if they are not exactly the same!

FOUNDATION: Because it’s Summer, no one really likes to cake their face in make-up.  Only apply a thin layer of foundation to even your skin tone and cover up any blemishes using a little concealer.  I am using Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow in Ivory Believe in Me.  It also has an SPF25 to help protect from the sun’s harmful rays.  Remember to blend until you can’t blend any more – you don’t want any patches or tide marks around your face or hair line.   Finally finish with a light dusting of loose powder to set your foundation and absorb any oil, making your foundation last longer.  TIP – brush downwards so that the tiny hairs on your face lie flat.

COMPLEXION: After you’ve applied your foundation, apply your favorite highlighter to your temples.  I used Sun Beam by Benefit for this particular look as it is liquid in a bottle!  Next, apply some bronzer for that sun kissed look.  I used two of my favourites -Hoola by Benefit as a base and then I added a touch of sparkle using Guerlain Terracota for Blondes.  Apply the bronzer in a ‘3’ formation – start at your forehead and work your way down, brushing your temples, the apple of your cheeks (remember to smile to get the perfect ‘apple’)  and finally a light dust on  your chin.

EYES: Apply shimmery gold eye shadow all over your eyelid, starting from the inner corner and out.

Next use a darker shimmery brown in the crease of your eye lid and make a kind of ‘number 7’ pattern to join the crease to the top of your eye lid.  Remember to blend blend blend!

Then, instead of using an eye liner, use a lovely sparkly green eye shadow along the upper and lower lash line.  The effect is dramatic and not so heavy as eye liner so it’s perfect for summer.  For the eyes I used the nEstee Lauder Batik Sun palette but you can definitely find similar colours by Bourjois.

Finish with a few strokes of black mascara and you’re done!

LIPS: I used a coral coloured shimmery lip gloss by Liz Earle to complement the warm golden tones in my make-up.

HAIR:  I’ve decided to keep this simple, so I went for tousled beach  locks.

Start off by curling your hair using either a curling iron or straighteners to create the locks. Then all you have to do is grab two pieces of your hair from the front and pin them back so your hair is out of your face.  You might want to backcomb a little at the roots to give height and volume.

NAILS: I have chosen a spectacular nail varnish to match the hint of green in my eye shadow. It’s a shimmery, metallic, two toned bluey green polish by Chanel called Azure.  You can get similar colours by Barry M.  I always apply an OPI top coat to ensure long lasting shine and glamour!

Here’s wishing you a fabulous summer wherever you are! Love Olivia x

At my school, make-up is totally banned.  The thing is, I feel so much more confident with it.  This is not to say that I am not comfortable with who I am or what I look like – hey – I’m putting my picture up here for the whole world to see, but the truth is, I feel happier and more self assured with a little bit of make-up.  I wear it every single day and have mastered the art of applying it so that it is actually really difficult to tell if I am wearing it or not.

If I went to school ‘au natural’, everyone would see my teenage spots and the dark bags under my eyes.  I wouldn’t bother to style my hair or pluck my eyebrows and I’d have my gappy teeth and braces on show.  Oh and my glasses would be the finishing touch.  Nice!  That would leave me looking beaut – not!

Here’s me ‘au natural’

Instead, I choose to wear a little bit of make-up to make me look like a prettier version of myself.

Here are my top tips on wearing school make-up and how to get away with it!

1. Skin care – First of all, make sure you become almost obsessive about your daily skincare routine – cleanse, tone and moisturise! At the moment, I am loving the new Elemis FreshSkin range, but Liz Earle is also a firm favourite of mine.

2. Spot Control – In addition, you might need to help control spots using specialist products.  I have discovered Skinetica – it’s a totally natural, water-based product that really works at minimizing spots as soon as they appear – I have been amazed by the results of using this product.  I also use the new Clearasil Blemish & Marks Scrub to help prevent spots and keep my skin really smooth.

3. Eyebrows – Carefully pluck any stray eyebrow hairs.  The super model, Cara Delevigne has set a trend for thicker eyebrows so make sure you don’t over pluck as they will never grow back.  Eyebrows are sisters, not twins so don’t get hung up about making them look exactly the same. I like to fill in any bare patches using a matching brown eye shadow so my brows look more defined but still really natural.

4. Foundation – It is totally vital to get the right colour foundation to match your skin tone.  You have to get this checked by the experts at the beauty counters.  The skin on your face is not the same as the colour of your skin on the back of your hand!  There is a real difference between cheap and more expensive foundations – buy the best one you can afford.  Cheap foundations can cake and clog your pores and look flaky.  I love the Benefit Counter at John Lewis and use ‘Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow’ in the shade ‘Ivory Believe in Me’.  I use a concealer to properly cover up any problem areas or spots – right now, I’m using Melvita which is a great new and natural range that helps treat spots while hiding them.

5. Blending your foundation is key.  I use a Beauty Blender to apply mine – you really don’t need much, but the blender helps to create an even toned complexion and leave you with flawless looking skin. You can also use a brush or a make-up sponge.  Fingers are fine, but you have to make sure you don’t miss any patches.  Badly applied foundation is a big giveaway to wearing make-up.

Here’s an example of badly applied foundation…check out the patchy orange and tide mark around the side of my face!  I look tango’d!  hey, we’ve all done it!  Also, look at the black eyeliner – another big school make-up giveaway.

6. Setting the foundation – I dust my face with an oil-absorbent loose powder such as Corn Silk which is really cheap and you can buy it in Boots.  It helps get rid of oily shine, which is useful especially around the T Zone.

7. Blush – I use a really pale pink blusher on the apple of my cheeks – just to give me a healthy, rosy glow.  My favourite colour for school make-up is  ‘Dandelion’ by Benefit.  It’s just totally natural looking. Remember to smile when you apply so you can see where the apple of your cheeks are otherwise you’ll end up with two blobs like the picture above.

8. Eyes – I don’t bother with eyeliner for school.  Thick black eyeliner is a major giveaway that you’re wearing make-up.  Instead, I curl my lashes and then apply a few strokes of mascara to give my eyes definition.  At the moment, I am using the ‘Rocket Volume Mascara’ by Maybeline – it’s much cheaper than ‘They’re Real’ by Benefit, but just as good.

9. Lips – Finally, I dab some ‘Rosy Lips Vaseline’ onto my lips.  It is completely natural looking and keeps my lips soft and conditioned.

See my earlier post on ‘How to do tousled hair’ and then simply scoop it up into a pony tail using a Molly Mabel hair band – I got mine in my Miss GlossyBox.

So what do you think?

I feel so much happier heading off to school looking like this, rather than ‘au natural’.  I feel confident, fresh and prepared for my day.  Surely that’s a good thing?  Most teenage girls don’t want to go around with their spots showing.  It makes them feel rubbish.  I do understand why schools get cross with girls who wear make-up really badly with orange faces and black mascara running down their cheeks.

I hope this post gives you an insight into how I wear make-up to school and get away with it …. Mostly!  Just don’t get too close to the teachers!

The absolute key to beautiful, clear skin is to make sure you get in to the daily habit of cleasning, toning and moisturizing with regular exfoliation and specific treatment for any blemishes or trouble spots.

I have been using the same products for a while, but recently I was sent a few samples from the new Freshskin range by Elemis to try and now I am a total convert!  It is designed for teens through to girls in their early 20s.  I love the packaging – even though it is for teens, it is still quite ‘grown up’ and sophisticated which I like.  I love the colours, BUT I especially LOVE the thoughtful little beauty tips that are printed on the side of the boxes.

Let me tell you about the products I have tried…

Skin Glow Exfoliating Face Wash

With a deep pore cleansing action, this devine smelling exfoliating facial wash leaves your skin feeling fresh and super smooth. It contains jojoba beads and cherry powder to gently polish and get rid of dead skin. Leaving your complexion brightened and more radiant.  I have been using this every other day by gently massaging into wet skin and then rinsing thoroughly with warm water.  You don’t need very much and so I think a tube will last a long time.

Deep Clean Purifying Face Mask – Using natural clays of goji berry extract and frankincense oil, this Deep Clean Purifying Face Mask helps rebalance your skin and bring out the impurities leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth. This thick face mask is very cool once applied and doesn’t irritate the skin in anyway but leaves it feeling refreshed.  I ran myself a bath and just slathered this on and chilled.  After 10 minutes, I rinsed it off and really felt like I had truly Fresh Skin!  REMEMBER to always remove all traces of make-up before applying a face mask.

Magical Moisture Quenching Face Mask – This face mask is perfect if you are suffering from dry skin. With ingredients of white lupin, arctic cranberry seed oil and apple extract, this magical quenching face mask gives your skin an instant moisture boost leaving your skin looking radiant and feeling exceptionally soft.  This has been especially useful lately with the miserable weather we have been having.  The constantly cold wind and then the drying central heating plays havoc with your complexion.

Skin Clear Treatment Gel – This anti – blemish gel powerfully kills any blemishes without over drying the skin. Formulated with salicylic acid, zinc and vitamin A to cleanse clogged pores and helps prevent any unwanted blemishes in the future. I really feel it has helped to dramatically reduce a few breakouts that I have had lately.

How to Use: Before applying, make sure you’ve cleansed thoroughly and toned your face. Then dispense a small amount onto your fingertip and dab onto the affected area in the morning and at night. Wait for it to completely dry then apply moisturiser.

Skin Clear Mattifying Moisturiser – This Mattifying Moisturiser is specially formulated for oily and blemish prone skin.   This really light and gentle moisturiser leaves your skin feeling hydrated without any shine at all, whilst reducing redness. The naturally derived marine extract Seamat absorbs excess oil whilst extract of iris, bergamot and vitamin A balance and purify the skin. It also makes it so much easier to apply make up after you’ve applied this moisturiser.  Teenage skin is prone to be oily and so this is the perfect solution.  It is a myth to think that oily skin doesn’t need moisturising.

Tired Eyes Soothing Eye Rescue – This reviving gel gently tightens and hydrates the delicate eye area. It also helps refresh and reduce puffiness. Elemis really has thought of everything!  This is just what your average teenager, who stays up too late staring at a computer screen needs!  Say goodbye to tired eyes as this soothing eye gel comes to the rescue!

How to use: The skin around the eye area is very delicate so never overload with product. Apply a small amount with a gently tapping action.

I totally love this range – it gives you exactly what it says on the box – FRESH SKIN!
